AZABACHE
History
Growers of our village “Aldeanueva de Ebro” joined their forces trying to improve the prosperity of the region. In 1956,they found our first winery “Viñedos de Aldeanueva”. The winery permitted social sustainability, preventing the abandonment of this rural area and keeping population since then. At the beginning, they were selling bulk wines, but soon they realized that the best wineries had such a great interest in their wine. As soon as they could, in 1965, they bought our first bottling line, starting his own commercialization of wine.
They have always had an incessant spirit of innovation, and as an example, they produced the first bottle of Organic wine marketed by the Rioja Region in 1998.
Also, since immemorial times they have observed that some of the vineyards were producing outstanding quality grapes, so in 2015 we decided to go to the next level and to build our main winery “Fincas de Azabache” in the, middle of the best 502 hectares, carefully selected.
Nowadays, we are ahead in wine production in our region owing a total of 3.000 h, owning also a winery specialised in Table Wines: Fortunate location and terroir. Unbelievable grape diversity. Sheltered from the cold winds, smooth ramps, excellent soils of chalky and ferrous clays in combination with an exceptional microclimate (continental with Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, an average temperature of 57, 02 °F); make our vineyards the perfect setting for growing exceptional quality grapes.
Our range of wines includes some of the most unique single varietals of Rioja wisely selected (tempranillo, graciano, garnacha, mazuelo,white tempranillo, viura and verdejo), organic wines, as well as different styles of Reserva and Crianza. In addition, we have recently launched a sparkling wine “Espumoso de Rioja” Also; all of our wines are Vegan and GMO Free.
Where tradition and the newest technology meet. We dreamed up this new bodega, endowed with the most advanced technology, where we offer unique opportunities to go beyond the cellar door and to discover the secrets behind the Rioja Region.
■ We are one of the few wineries holding a specific technology for the elaboration of white wines.
■ We set new boundaries monitoring each one of our parcels individually. In this way, we help the vine the reach the perfect level of ripeness. Our weather station helps us to know what the vineyard is like in detail.
■ We were pioneers in implementing the Oresteo System, one of the most advanced and environmentally friendly systems for the productions of wines. Some of the advantages the System offers:
- Re-use of natural CO2 created during fermentation.
- Real- time tracking of fermentation tanks.
- Wines with lower SO2 content, respectful with the environment and the carbon footprint.
- Fermentation at perfectly controlled temperatures.
- Substantial improvement in the extraction of aromas and compounds.
We always have exciting news: continual innovation blended with passion. In Fincas de Azabache we are always looking to maintain at the forefront of the latest market trends. Some examples are:
■ Recently we have released our uniqueness“Fincas de Azabache Espumoso Tempranillo Blanco”. It is a sparkling wine made by the Traditional Method (Champenoise) within the new category of DOCa Rioja "Quality Sparkling". It has been elaborated 100% with the rare Tempranillo Blanco variety. We have put a lot of effort and passion into this wine, creating an authentic and exceptional Rioja. To this day, there are very few sparkling wines from Rioja and even fewer made with this unique variety. This sparkling has been recently awarded by Master of Wine Tim Atkins as “Discovery of the year”. Always have a bottle chilling in the fridge from an impromptu celebration!
■ Likewise, we are excited about our wine “Viñedo Singular Coscojares” a gem that will be launched this year. It has been elaborated with premium grapes coming from our greatest exponent of Old Vineyard “Coscojares”, one of the very few ancient grenache left in the region, a great exponent of the maximum expression of Rioja, a unique handcrafted masterpiece.
Caring for the planet: our pledge. Our profound respect for the land, to which our wines and we owe so much, has driven us to make a commitment to sustainable practices in order to minimize our impact, some examples:
■ Reducing the use of pesticides and insecticides to the minimum, our aim is that the treatment with pheromones will be used in the total extension of our vineyards in the forthcoming years.
■ Implementing the Oresteo system for the production of wines, a pump over system that allows us to make the most of CO2 generated during the fermentation, helping with not only energy savings, but also avoiding 906 kg of CO2 per year released into the atmosphere.
■ This year we have approved to carry out a photovoltaic solar installation, which is intended to product about 440.000 KWh per year. This will allow us to reduce the electricity consumption by around 25%.
Good Practices
We are SMETA certified, which recognizes best practices of labour, health and safety and business ethics. Some other certifications we hold are IFS, BRC and ISO Standards, among others.
International Prestige: New awards and recognitions. Getting some sort of appreciation for good work is an inherent human need. Even the simplest recognition goes a long way. This year so far we have obtained more than 25 medals and awards in our Fincas de Azabache wines at some of the most prestigious international wine competitions such as Berliner Wein Trophy, Mundus Vini or Decanter World Wine Awards. This encourages us to keep up our company’s competitive edge.
